THE 'MAMMELOKKER'(The Breast Sucker)
The true nature of a woman as a mother is built in her ability to nurture. The act of care beautifies womanhood and sets strong the age-long belief that a mother is a life giver.
'Mammelokker' is a Dutch word which means 'Breast Sucker' in English language and the story of Pero and Simon(Cimon) depicts where breast sucking gave life and freedom.
A certain old man in Greece named Simon was sentenced to death by starvation by the Roman authorities. The authorities found it not wise to kill him instantly but to keep him in prison without feeding him, so that on the ground of hunger and pain, he will simply die off. This certain prisoner named Simon, had a daughter named Pero who at the time her father was sentenced, begged the authorities to grant her the opportunity to be seeing her father everyday until he dies. The authorities granted her wish but made sure that she was carefully checked and searched so that she will not smuggle-in food to her father.
Days passed by, months passed by and the man refused to die.
It became worrisome for the authorities because they knew clearly well that this man has not eaten since he was imprisoned but he still managed to be alive. Everyday, his daughter still come to visit him and the authorities maintained strong check and they couldn't catch her with any food after several search.
On one faithful day, as the girl came to visit her father, one of the guards monitored the man's prison room secretly and found the girl breastfeeding her father in the prison.
He ran and reported to the authorities and the authorities was marvelled at that singular act of kindness but instead of sending her to prison for defiling the instruction of 'no food for Mr. Simon', they granted her father freedom.
This was how Pero(a lactating mother) gave life and freedom to her father. Today, that her act and the corresponding release of her father is known worldwide as the 'Roman Charity'.
